The first official full-length trailer for Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation has arrived. I’m not going to describe the trailer frame-by-frame, mostly because I wrote this essay prior to the trailer dropping and am racing out the door as soon as I hit “publish” in order to get my kids to school on time. I will watch it later. I’m sure it’s great as the initial Mission: Impossible trailers usually are. The first teaser for Mission: Impossible, along with the first teaser for GoldenEye in 1995, basically set the template for the modern action movie trailer, but that’s a conversation for another day.
Anyway, what matters is that there is a fifth Mission: Impossible movie on the way, five months sooner than we thought no less. This time out Christopher McQuarrie is directing from a Drew Pearce script. The franchise has been around since 1996, which means it has survived an entire generation or two of change in terms of what constitutes a blockbuster. Back in 1996, Brian DePalma’s Mission: Impossible was expected to be one of the very biggest movies of the summer, if not the biggest. Today, Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation is just trying not to get lost in the crowd, although by default of the weaker July/August slate it might end up being the 800 lbs gorilla yet again.
Download Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation What we’re seeing in Mission: Impossible 5, Furious 7 from Universal/Comcast Corp., and Sony's SPECTRE (the teaser for that one drops on Saturday, I believe) are long running franchises that are built on old-school action and practical stunt work. Star power obviously plays a role in the M:I series, as Tom Cruise was the main attraction back in 1996 and he remains the main attraction today. But the films are from an era where a real-world action spectacular, with real stunt work and real vehicular destruction, was considered an A-level blockbuster. Now that’s not to ignore the copious practical filmmaking on display in any number of fantasy properties (yes, even the Star Wars prequels and the Matrix sequels), one cannot deny that the more fantastical franchise-friendly films have displaced the big-budget star-driven action film at the top of the blockbuster hill.
I do recall the 2000 release of John Woo’s (painfully underrated) Mission: Impossible II as the last time that a real-world action-adventure film was both expected to be the biggest hit of the summer and in-fact was the biggest hit of the summer. In fact, at the start, the Mission: Impossible films were indeed top-tier box office attractions. The first film scored a record-breaking $74.6 million over its first six days, including $46m over Fri-Sun (behind only Batman Forever and Jurassic Park) before dropping like a rock because audiences couldn’t be bothered to actually pay attention to the film they were watching and declared the film too confusing. Nonetheless, the $181m domestic total and $457m worldwide cume was the year’s third biggest (behind Twister and Independence Day, a sign of things to come).
Watch Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation Online Mission: Impossible II dropped over Memorial Day weekend 2000, where it earned a whopping $90m over its first six days and $57m over the Fri-Sun portion, which was among the top-five debut weekends of all time. The film earned $215m domestic, still Cruise’s second biggest domestic hit behind War of the Worlds five years later, and it won the summer even if Gladiator took most of the buzz. Mission: Impossible III was a hiccup of sorts, as it dropped right in the middle of Tom Cruise’s PR meltdown. I don’t know if there was any correlation, but having a plot involving Ethan Hunt getting married to a much-younger Katie Holmes look-a-like (Michelle Monaghan, who deserved better than to play the hostage) and having a (great) teaser that was based on the threat of gruesome violence being done to Monaghan by Philip Seymour Hoffman purely to get Cruise pissed off probably didn’t help.
Tom Cruise still made a fortune off the film, and first-time director J.J. Abrahams got solid critical notices, but it was not considered a successful venture. Another five year break followed, but the franchise (and Cruise) came roaring back with Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol. The film was directed by Brad Bird and is unquestionably one of the best action movies of the last twenty years. The film ended up opening over Christmas, but it did something neat. It opened five days early just in IMAX screens, where it earned $12.7m on 423 IMAX screens for a $30k per-screen-average over the Fri-Sun portion. That makes sense, since the IMAX footage in Ghost Protocol remains, all due respect to Chris Nolan, Michael Bay, and J.J. Abrams, the best I’ve ever seen in any feature film.
Parents need to know that Tom Cruise returns for his fifth Mission: Impossible adventure as Ethan Hunt, and this time the stakes go beyond an individual nemesis. Hunt and his IMF team aren't up against a terrorist cell, greedy corporation, or political entity; they must defeat the Syndicate, a secret international group of intelligence agents and mercenaries loyal not to any country but to their own "rogue nation." The IMF has been defunded, but Hunt rounds up his crew (including Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, and Ving Rhames) to prove the Syndicate's existence and take it out. Expect the usual over-the-top stunt-filled action violence, explosions, and possible character deaths.
Tom Cruise has always had a reputation for making himself much of the action of his films scenes. With Mission: Impossible – Secret Nation, his fifth work as agent Ethan Hunt, was no different. Also during filming, shot the world the image of Cruise, aged 52, outside of an Airbus A400M and the 1500 meters of altitude. For it seems to be precisely this scene the flagship of the new feature film.
Part of this impressive result can be seen in the teaser below and it also is showing the first poster of the film, you can check out just above. Three images of the film was released by Paramount Pictures, which already promised to release on 23 (tomorrow!) The first full trailer. But from what we can give in the material released today, can expect a Cruise in top physical shape and many, many surreal action scenes – hallmark of the series, say by the way.Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – Secret Nation also has Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Jeremy Renner, Alec Baldwin and Rebecca Ferguson in the cast.

These highly trained operatives are hellbent on creating a new world order through an escalating series of terrorist attacks.
